Antonio Vergara has made his senior Italy debut, completing a journey from Napoli’s youth academy to representing the Azzurri on one of international football’s biggest stages.
The Napoli midfielder was introduced by Roberto Mancini in the 62nd minute against France at the Stade de France, with Italy trailing 1–0. Just six minutes later, Vergara was involved in the attacking sequence that led to Alessandro Bastoni’s equaliser, making an immediate contribution as the Azzurri recovered to secure a 1–1 draw.
A product of Napoli’s youth system, Vergara has had to earn his place in senior football. Loan spells away from Naples provided valuable experience and helped him develop before returning to compete for opportunities with his boyhood club. His progression has now been rewarded with a place in the national team, where Mancini is introducing a new generation of Italian players.
Making his debut against France presented a demanding first examination, but Vergara showed the confidence to involve himself in Italy’s attacking play and contribute at an important moment in the match. His performance offered an encouraging introduction to international football and another indication of the progress he has made.
From Napoli’s academy to the Stade de France, Vergara has earned his opportunity to wear the Azzurri shirt. His debut was the latest achievement in a career built through patience, development and the determination to establish himself at the highest level.
